Antwerp
Dear gentle traveler after yesterday's sobering day out we elected to go to Antwerp with no particular activity or destination in mind and were wowed by the train station which is a statement in itself and worth a visit to Antwerp just for that. The squares and buildings were very impressive as as the castle that hosted the tourist center. We also wandered through the diamond district on a strictly window shop basis only and found the local synagogue which was a rather unassuming building squished in-between the imposing office blocks of the diamond district. Road access directly in front of the synagogue was access controlled and there were 3 police vehicles in the vicinity and one police bike with Hebrew lettering, not the place to take a photo lightly. We did enjoy Antwerp and although a number of trains back to Ghent were cancelled the one that did arrive, 30 minutes late, catered for the thousand or so of us waiting!
